Although knowledge of your Y haplogroup is not essential for many genealogical projects, where you are looking for recent connections between people, it does flesh out the picture. Haplogroups are generally capable of distinguishing broad geographic categories, European or African or Asian or Native American. This may be a point of idle curiosity or it may provide an important clue if the very continent of ancestry is in question.
The founding father of your haplogroup had a certain haplotype, the starting point for all his descendants. His descendants have been creating variations on the haplotype, with each marker increasing or decreasing at random. There will be a large number of distinct haplotypes found within the haplogroup, but the central tendency, the core around which the shifts have occurred, sometimes remain visible for a long period.
